BayShare (Lancaster and Morecambe Makers)

The 3R Foundation recently awarded £640 to BayShare (Lancaster and Morecambe Makers) for a solar panel and portable battery power system.

BayShare is an exciting new "Library of Things" project giving local people affordable access to useful items they may only need occasionally, such as drills, gazebos, tools and catering equipment.

Rather than everyone having to buy equipment that might only be used once or twice a year, BayShare allows items to be borrowed or hired for a nominal fee. The idea not only helps people save money, but also encourages sharing, reduces unnecessary consumption and makes better use of resources.

The 3R grant funded a portable battery power system and 160W solar panel, providing a flexible source of electricity that can itself be shared with the community.

The equipment can provide 240V power for everyday electrical devices where mains electricity isn't readily available, making it particularly useful for outdoor events, community markets, camping trips and other activities.

After discussing the options, BayShare chose a modern branded 160W solar panel rather than a higher wattage panel using older technology. The newer panel is designed to perform more efficiently in the UK's often less than sunny conditions, making it a practical choice for the project.

It's a great example of Reuse and sharing in action, helping people access useful equipment without everyone needing to own it themselves.

The 3R Foundation funds grants like this through the Recycle, Reuse, Rehome charity shop in Carnforth (next to Tesco).

Every purchase in the shop helps fund grants for local charities, clubs and community groups across North Lancashire and South Cumbria.
